Course Description :

  • This workshop provides a comprehensive approach to working with the individual who has osteopenia, osteoporosis or wants to preserve bone mass. Individuals who attend this course gain knowledge and skills for improving and maintaining bone mineral density to reduce the chance of developing osteopenia and osteoporosis and for working with the disease once it has developed.

Key topics to be covered:

  • Lecture 1: Osteoporosis: new and evolving risk factors and advances in treatment.
  • Lab 1: Posture Lab 
  • Lecture 2: Clinical interventions to reduce fracture risk.
  • Lab 2: Fall Prevention Lab.

Course Objectives

  • Explain how hormones effect bone metabolism and who is most at risk for developing osteoporosis.
  • Identify the role of calcium, vitamin D, phosphorous and phytoestrogens in bone metabolism.
  • Identify current pharmacological therapies available for the prevention and treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis. (n/a pharm techs)
  • Construct a fall prevention program.
  • Construct an exercise plan for strengthening the muscles of the upper back to reduce kyphosis.
