Thyroid Autoimmune Diseases
Course Description & Information:
- The endocrine system is intricately involved in important biological functions throughout the body. One part of the endocrine system is the thyroid gland. Like many tissues in the body, the thyroid gland is sometimes subject to attack from the immune system (autoimmunity). Thyroid function can be profoundly affected by autoimmune reactions, including increased or decreased activity of the gland, and associated hormones. This presentation addresses normal thyroid function, organ-specific autoimmunity, and the effects of autoimmune reactions to thyroid tissue. The resultant physiologic sequelae of thyroid autoimmune diseases will be discussed, as will treatment options for patients suffering from these diseases.
