Suicide Prevention

Course Description & Information:

  • Suicide facts: Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the US; 1.2M suicide attempts in 2020; 45,979 deaths by suicide in 2020; the rate of suicide for those ages 10 to 24 increased nearly 60% between 2007 and 2018 and is the second leading cause of death. This course addresses current data on suicide and suicide prevention. Level: Intermediate

Course Objectives:

  • State factors that may increase one’s risk for attempting suicide.
  • Identify protective factors that may lessen one’s risk for attempting suicide.
  • Recognize the importance of using trauma-informed language when discussing suicide.
  • Define the role that health care workers play within the spectrum of suicide prevention strategies.
  • Summarize how increased COVID-related stress may be a new suicide risk factor for health care workers.
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
