Strength Training for Seniors Course Description:

Are your patients strong enough? Strength is diminished through aging, but it is trainable and preventable! The average person may be subjected to a cumulative load of thousands of pounds per day just walking! So, is your strength training appropriate and challenging enough to maximize your patients outcome? This course offers exceptional knowledge and expertise for the rehabilitation and medical professional in the area of strength training for the older adult. Get the edge on maximizing your patients strength with current concepts in strengthening in this lecture /lab course. Strength training benefits are numerous and research will be presented that shows it to be safe and effective for the older population. This course offers guidance on designing strength training programs specifically for seniors and includes literature research review, principles of specific weight training exercises, modifications for older adults. The role of protein, creatine and amino acids will also be discussed and their use in increasing strength and addressing disuse atrophy. During the lab, participants will have the ability to practice strength exercises while modifications and rehabilitation progression /regressions will be presented. Intermediate level.

Participants are encouraged to bring a foam roller, (2) 5 lb dumbbells and a 3 ft theraband or equivalent. Participants do not have to exercise nor bring exercise equipment to receive credit for the course.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice all exercises along with modifications that are taught.

Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, and other medical professionals with exercise therapy focus.

8:30 AM – 3:30 PM - Workshop
(Break for lunch on your own 12:00 – 1:00 PM)
Certificates are distributed upon course completion (full attendance and completion of course evaluation required).
