Course Description & Information:

  • Appetite is powerful driver of our behavior and we need to understand how the brain and gut regulates our appetite to be able to control it. Today, over 75% of Americans are overweight and/or obese with over 19% of our children being overweight/obese. This is an intermediate course that covers the brain-body connection of the science of appetite. Participants will learn about the different systems that govern appetite and behavior as well as the hormones that are involved in regulating metabolism, and what can be to improve our metabolism and control our eating behavior. Additionally, an in-depth overview of the role of diet, exercise and drug therapy in relationship to appetite and metabolism will be covered.

Course Objectives:

  • Explain how dietary macronutrient intake and composition can affect cognition.
  • Review the mechanisms by which select vitamins/minerals that have been shown to have beneficial effect in the treatment of age related dementia.
  • List neurotoxins that are in our food supply and their effect on memory and cognition.
  • Discuss dietary nutrients that have been shown to be critical in brain development and growth.
  • Review the relationship between oxidative damage, inflammation and impaired nutrition to the brain.
