2-hour On-Demand: Sleep Health: Sleep Deprivation, Deficiency & Chronic Health Problems


Course Description & Information:

  • Sleep deficiency is a common public health problem in the United States. People in all age groups report not getting enough sleep. As part of a health survey for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 7–19 percent of adults in the United States reported not getting enough rest or sleep every day. Nearly 40 percent of adults report falling asleep during the day without meaning to at least once a month. Also, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have chronic (ongoing) sleep disorders.

    This course covers:

    1. The Science of Sleep

    • What is sleep
    • Physiological changes during sleep
    • Functions / benefits of sleep
    • Measuring sleep
    • Circadian rhythm
    • NREM/REM Sleep

    2. Sleep disorders and sleep problems

    • Types of sleep disorders (Insomnias, Hypersomnolence, Parasomnias, Sleep Related Respiratory Disorders, Circadian Rhythm disorders, Sleep movement disorders) b
    • Highlights on Insomnia, Excessive Sleepiness, OSA, Narcolepsy
    • Link to chronic disease (Obesity, T2DM, Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, Mood Disorders, Immune Function, Pain)

    3. Good sleep habits / Lifestyle / How to improve good quality sleep (e.g. exercise, limit caffeine/alcohol, relaxation, limit screen time, weight loss, bedroom environment, supplements.(e.g. melatonin)

Course Objectives:

  • Identify health conditions/diseases that are affected by inadequate or poor sleep.
  • Define at least two types or sleep disorders and treatment for each.
  • Summarize at least two strategies for improving quality of sleep along with mechanism of action.
  • Explain how exercise can improve quality of sleep.
  • State the link between stress and sleep quality.

Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
