Probiotics to prevent diarrhea, gas, and cramping caused by antibiotics as well as to enhance immune function. This seminar reviews the scientific data regarding prebiotic and probiotic use in disease and health.

Course Objectives:

  • List health benefits associated with prebiotics and probiotics relating to gastrointestinal function and immune system function.
  • Identify the relationship between the gut microbiota, leaky gut and inflammatory disease.
  • Identify specific strains of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium that have been shown to decrease antibiotic associated diarrhea.
  • Identify the role of probiotics in patient care as supported by evidence based medicine.

Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
