Course Description & Information:
- Osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, resulting in an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds. Osteoporosis is a disease where decreased bone strength increases the risk of a broken bone. It is the most common reason for a broken bone among the elderly. This course explores current treatment and prevention strategies in the management and treatment of osteoporosis.

Course Objectives:
- Identify the role of hormones in bone health.
- Identify diseases that increase the risk for developing osteoporosis and prevention strategies.
- List risk factors for osteoporosis and osteopenia.
- Review the role of vitamins, minerals and nutrition in bone metabolism and bone health.
- List current pharmacological therapies available for the prevention and treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
- State the role of exercise in bone metabolism.
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
