Course Description & Information:
- Osteoporosis causes more than 9 million fractures annually, resulting in an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds. Osteoporosis is a disease where decreased bone strength increases the risk of a broken bone. It is the most common reason for a broken bone among the elderly. Additionally, osteoporosis is associated with changes in balance and physical performance and has psychosocial consequences which increase the risk of falling. This course explores current treatment and prevention strategies in the management and treatment of osteoporosis and falls.

Course Objectives:
- Identify the role of hormones in bone health.
- Recognize diseases and drugs that increase the risk for bone loss and for developing osteoporosis.
- Sate risk factors for osteoporosis and osteopenia.
- Review the role of vitamins, minerals, nutrition and exercise in bone metabolism and bone health.
- List current pharmacological therapies available for the prevention and treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
- Recognize the primary role of the healthcare team in managing patients at risk of impaired balance and falls.
- Explain how nursing professionals, occupational and physical therapy professionals can work together to prevent falls.
- Identify common risk factors for balance impairments and increased falls.
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
