  • Obesity is a global epidemic in adults and children. Food addiction is considered a compulsive eating disorder where a person frequently eats large quantities of food in a short period of time. Inappropriate food intake behavior is one of the main drivers for fat mass development leading to obesity. Importantly the gut microbiota-mediated signals have emerged as key actors regulating food intake thereby controlling hunger or satiety/satiation feelings. This seminars defines the connection between obesity, food addiction and the gut-brain axis.

  • Identify the brain-gut-microbiome interactions in obesity and food addiction.
  • Explain the role of addiction and stress neurobiology on food intake and obesity.
  • Recognize the impact of obesity on brain function.
  • List pharmacological and dietary intervention for treatment of food addiction and binge-eating disorder.
  • Define the role of exercise therapy in treating addiction and obesity.

Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
