Nutrition for Seniors

Course Description & Information:

  • The number of Americans ages 65 and older will more than double over the next 40 years, reaching 80 million in 2040. The nation is aging. By 2040, about one in five Americans will be age 65 or older, up from about one in eight in 2000. Based on the number of seniors, it is important to understand the nutritional concerns of this population including dietary strategies to reduce the risk of heart disease, hypertension, and some cancers. Additionally, special vitamin and mineral needs for the aging population and common drug-nutrient interactions should be studied. This course provides current nutrition information to meet the needs of our aging seniors. Level: Intermediate

Course Objectives/Learning Outcome:

  • List specific vitamins, minerals, and other key nutrients that become of increased concern in the aging population.
  • Discuss metabolic changes and metabolic needs associated with aging.
  • Review common drug-nutrient interactions for commonly prescribed medications.
  • List dietary strategies to reduce the risk of heart disease, hypertension, and some cancers.
  • Identify dietary patterns that have been associated with longevity & "healthy" aging (e.g. plant-based, calorie-restriction, etc).
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
