Course Description & Information:
Human slavery has always existed; with the popularity of social media the awareness of human trafficking is gaining recognition throughout the world and we are now recognizing its prevalence in the United States. As healthcare and mental health professionals it is essential that we acquire the knowledge, training, and skills in conjunction with human trafficking. The purpose of this course is to increase the level of awareness and knowledge about human trafficking and exploitation, so health and mental health professionals can identify and intervene in cases of exploitation. Practitioners should consult primary resources, state regulations, and their healthcare facility policies and procedures for specific application of said content to their local situation. Course Objectives:
- Define human trafficking and the forms of human trafficking.
- List vulnerabilities that place individuals at increased risk of becoming a victim of human trafficking.
- Recognize factors that place a person at greater risk of being a victim of human trafficking.
- Describe health consequences of human trafficking.
- Identify a victim of human trafficking in a healthcare setting.
- Describe procedures for sharing information related to human trafficking with a patient.
- Recognize who the trafficker is and why they traffic.
- Restate the role of the healthcare worker in caring for human trafficking victims.
- State procedures for reporting victims of human trafficking.
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
