Exercise & Diabetes

Course Description & Information:

  • Exercise is key in the management and prevention of type 2 diabetes and in maintaining health for the type 1 diabetic. This course covers the recommendations for exercise for those with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Special considerations for exercise for the diabetic with peripheral neuropathy and retinopathy are reviewed. Additionally, management of insulin for the insulin dependent diabetic during exercise is discussed.

Course Objectives:

  • Review the role of exercise in the management of blood glucose and insulin levels.
  • Discuss the exercise prescription for those with diabetic neuropathy and special considerations for the diabetic foot.
  • List specific exercise contraindications for the patient with diabetic retinopathy.
  • Identify special considerations for the diabetic patient with cardiovascular disease.
  • Provide guidelines for exercise for the patient with renal disease.
