Ethical Practice In Healthcare
Course Description & Information:
- At the intersection of safe, quality healthcare and ethical decision making stands both the patient and healthcare professional. These two key stakeholders are routinely placed together in a multitude of challenging situations. Each must navigate through technological advances, rising healthcare costs, shifting political landscapes, and regulatory standards and ensure ensure patient-centered, ethical care remains a priority.
In this course, nursing jurisprudence will be discussed in terms of not only the Texas Nurse Practice Act and Board of Nursing (Rules and Position Statements), but also in consideration of professional boundaries and other principles of nursing ethics and ethics for other medical professionals. Four major principles of health care ethics will be defined before delving into several contemporary dilemmas plaguing patients and health care providers. Since personal values and morals often influence actions and choices, this too will be explored. Ultimately, the importance of utilizing an ethical framework balanced with professional obligations, codes, and standards is key to maneuvering the dynamic healthcare environment.

Course Objectives:
Through active participation in this course, participants will achieve the following objectives:
- Define four major principles of healthcare ethics.
- Analyze personal values that may influence approaches to ethical decision making.
- State implications of professional practice acts, codes of ethics, oaths, and position statements on healthcare.
- Identify challenges of present-day, ethical dilemmas facing patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Identify the role of the healthcare professionals in ethical healthcare issues.
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
