  • Autoimmune diseases are the third most common category of disease in the United States after cancer and heart disease. Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 8% of the population, 78% of whom are women making autoimmune disease a major women’s health issue. Autoimmunity is the underlying cause of more than 100 serious, chronic illnesses with over 50 million Americans living and coping with autoimmune disease. This course reviews current research on autoimmunity and common autoimmune diseases. Course level: Intermediate.

Course Objectives:

  • Define autoimmunity.
  • Distinguish between autoinflammatory disease and autoimmune disease.
  • Identify how the gut microbiota can impact immune sensing and contribute to autoimmune disease.
  • Explore the connection between women and autoimmune disease.
  • Explain the relation between mitochondrial dysfunction and autoimmune diseases.
  • State the role of nutrition in autoimmune disease (e.g Celiac disease, RA, MS, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.).

Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
