Relaxation Techniques for Health Course Description & Information:

  • Stress is a physical and emotional reaction that people experience as they encounter changes in life. Long term stress may contribute to digestive disorders, headaches, sleep disorders, and other symptoms. Stress may worsen asthma and has been linked to depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Relaxation techniques help to reduce the effects of stress. Some examples of relaxation response techniques are autogenic training, biofeedback, deep breathing, guided imagery, progressive relaxation, and self-hypnosis.

Course Objectives:

  • Define the stress response and distinguish between the body’s physiological response of “good” (eustress) stress and “bad” (chronic) stress.
  • Discuss how the different relaxation techniques counter the physiological effects of stress.
  • Review the different relaxation techniques used in medicine to improve an individual's health outcome.
  • Describe the physiological response to exercise and how the exercise response may promote relaxations
