Course description:
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in America. Today, more than one in five Americans suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, with more than 2,500 Americans dying from it each day. Of those with heart disease, 52.2 percent are male and 47.8 percent are female; 88.2 percent are white, 9.5 percent are black, and 2.4 percent are of other races. Heart disease is clearly a national concern. Over 50 million Americans have high blood pressure, the leading contributor to heart disease. Of those people, 35 percent don't know they have it. Diabetes, the metabolic syndrome and abdominal obesity are other major contributors to the increased prevalence of heart disease.
This is an introductory course for medical professionals that explores the latest research into the old and new risk factors for heart disease along with advances in treatment and prevention. Other topics to be covered included women and heart disease, new technologies and screening procedures, childhood obesity, and diet, exercise and neutraceuticals.
Course Objectives:
- Identify potential new risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
- List treatment options for the cardiometabolic syndrome.
- Identify the role of abdominal obesity in inflammation, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
- List new pharmacological agents that reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- List dietary and exercise strategies for the management/prevention of cardiovascular disease.
